The Hatch is a private home in South East Kent that underwent an extensive renovation in 2025.
The setting asked for a kitchen rooted in natural materials, with the craftsmanship and character to hold its own in a home being rebuilt with real care.
The design draws on a traditional inframe shaker style in solid ash, with purpose-turned spindles, tongue and groove panelling, and dovetail and embossed drawers throughout. A bespoke larder was designed around the client’s own needs, with custom shelving and a purpose-made kitchen roll holder built in from the start. Against the island, a custom-made integrated banquette seat creates a place to pause, to talk, and to be in the room while the kitchen does its work.
The cabinetry was delivered primed, with the clients painting it themselves on site as the renovation progressed. It is a kitchen that was finished by the people who live in it, and that is exactly as it should be.
