Foreland is a bungalow extension in Canterbury, Kent, designed for a working couple who doubled the footprint of their family home.
From the outset, a hidden utility was non-negotiable. The brief centred on creating a calm, streamlined kitchen that felt completely free from clutter, with appliances kept firmly off the worktops.
The layout balances everyday functionality with hosting. A double butler sink was essential, both for its practicality and its aesthetic appeal, paired with a boiling water tap for ease. The hob was positioned on the island, with venting induction selected to remove the need for an overhead extractor and maintain clean sightlines within the high, pitched ceiling.

Functionality underpins every element of the design. Double ovens were specified, with one doubling as a microwave and air fryer, alongside two pull-out larders flanking the fridge for organised, accessible storage. At the far end of the kitchen, a built-in media wall allows the TV to be pulled out and angled towards the island, ensuring the space works as well for socialising as it does for day-to-day living.
Materiality was just as considered as the layout. Walnut veneer, chosen during the design consultation, brings warmth through its timeless character and natural grain. This is balanced with a squirrel grey finish, subtly blue in tone, to keep the overall palette contemporary. Brushed brass detailing runs throughout, adding a refined and enduring touch.
Layered lighting, both above and below the cabinetry, creates a softer, more ambient atmosphere, particularly when entertaining. Royal Calacatta Gold quartz worktops run seamlessly into the splashbacks, delivering a clean, cohesive finish that ties the space together.
Storage drove every decision, from the American-style fridge freezer to the pull-out bin and deep, intelligently designed cupboards that maximise every inch. The result is a kitchen that feels considered, elevated and effortless to live in.
